Batson-Cook Development Co. is putting the finishing touches on a $16 million public-private partnership that is adding Green office and retail space - as well as parking - around the Georgia Theatre in downtown Athens.

Batson-Cook Development Co. developed the downtown parking deck and mixed-use facility in partnership with the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Athens Downtown Development Authority. The facility located along West Clayton and Washington streets includes 14,600 square feet of retail space, 28,000 square feet of office space and 540 parking spaces.

Among the businesses that plan to open in the space, Waffle House will take up 1,850 square feet and bar and restaurant Fuzzy's Taco Shop has signed on for 3,000 square feet. They will be joined by trendy frozen yogurt store Yoforia and Momma Goldberg's Deli. On the office side, Partner Software Inc. is taking 11,500 square feet.

Featuring a roof top garden, drought tolerant vegetation and a rain water cistern, the development's sustainable elements also include recycled building materials, energy efficient air conditioning units, and tenant guidelines encouraging green buildouts. In fact, the project will boast more collective greenspace when finished than before when it was a surface parking lot and bank drive-through.

"Our ability to develop this project in a holistic manner with our own equity and with our sister construction company makes this a win-win," said Jeremy Hammerton, vice-president for development with Batson-Cook Development Co.
